MUN EPFL is a student organization dedicated to facilitating discussions and events that familiarize individuals with international affairs and simulate United Nations debates for EPFL students. In these debates, participants act as delegates, advocating the perspectives of the countries they represent within predetermined crisis scenarios. The sessions emphasize collaboration and compromise, with the ultimate goal of formulating resolutions that gain broad approval among the participating countries. Annually, a new committee is elected to lead the organization, overseeing various operational divisions to ensure its smooth functioning.

Each year, the association organizes a four-day conference at EPFL, attracting delegates from various universities to engage in debates. For the 2022-2023 edition, as the Head of Organization and Logistics, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to assist in the planning of the event, contributing to its overall success.

Being part of a team dedicated to organizing a conference from scratch with each one of us focused on a specific aspect of it; from academics and logistics, to socials, sponsoring and finances, was quite interesting. Most of us had never done something like this before, and a lot of challenges arose from that. Working together got difficult sometimes as we felt lost in what to do numerous times and got into passive-aggressiveness. This is when I learned the importance of good management and pro-activeness, and defined more accurately my idea of professional boundaries.

Another difficulty I personally faced as under-secretary of organization and logistics was that I needed to go out of my comfort zone and put on new and different caps. Calling multiple caterers to find a good one within our budget, e-mailing various hotels and hostels to convince them to offer us discounts and deals for our delegates,

and managing the logistics of the goodies, gifts, and bookings of the debating rooms was stressful, as these are skills you don’t necessarily learn in an engineering school.

These experiences helped me grow my professional self and competencies.
